The
Byzantine era began after the fall of the Roman Empire in
the 4th Century AD. It lasted for more than a thousand years,
and during that time the arts flourished under the influence
of Christianity.
What
used to be the Eastern Roman Empire (the Balkans, Turkey and
the Middle East) became packed with magnificent churches which
featured priceless works of art.
Through
paintings and frescos, artifacts and mosaics, the Byzantines
celebrated God and the lifes of Jesus and the Saints.
The
Andreas Malecos collection features photographs of frescos
that appear in churches in Greece and Cyprus.
